The Crossing | Teach Us To Pray
Lord, teach us to pray. We will combine what Jesus taught in Luke 11 and Matthew 6 because we all have a lot to learn when it comes to prayer.

Learning to pray involves praying to learn. This week is an orientation and overview on prayer. Specifically the prayer life of Jesus. Hebrews 5:7 makes a case for prayer and acknowledging that we all have a lot to learn. Why did Jesus have to pray? What do we learn about prayer from the example of Jesus? The phrase Lord, teach us to pray is a prayer itself. Are you asking Jesus to teach you? Help us. Show us. Stretch us. Guide our prayer life.

Prayer honors God and asks for his help. In the Lord’s prayer. Jesus pulls together the essence of all prayers and combines them into a simple structure. He begins with the greatness of God and our relationship to Him. He then moves to the specifics of our daily life, including our basic needs, our relationships with others and our faithfulness to God.

The motivation to keep on praying is found in trusting God’s generous heart. Praying is sometimes the last thing we think of doing. We also struggle with if it’s working, or what’s the point--if God is just going to do whatever he wants anyway. We get frustrated by sincere prayers that seem to go unanswered. Jesus encourages us to keep on praying and to not give up. The One we are praying to has a good heart and wants to give us good things...so keep on asking, keep on seeking, keep on knocking.
