Caribbean/Central America

Haiti is the third largest Caribbean nation. And, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Haiti lies in the hurricane belt and has seen numerous devastating storms. It has also recently experienced strong earthquakes which caused much destruction. It has extensive deforestation, soil erosion and inadequate supplies of drinkable water. It is difficult to make a living there. While more than half of the 10 million people living in Haiti work in the agricultural sector, the country depends on imports for half of its food and 80% of its rice. Poverty is a way of life.
